Psoriasis Ayurvedic Treatment in Kerala

— Dr. Vishnu B.A.M.S

Psoriasis is a skin problem where skin cells grow too fast, about 10 times faster than usual. This causes bumpy patches to form on the skin. On lighter skin, these patches can be red with white scales, while on darker skin, they may look purplish, violet, or brown with grey scales. These patches can appear anywhere on the body, but they often appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. It’s important to know that psoriasis is not contagious, meaning it can’t be passed from one person to another.

common symptoms of psoriasis include:

  • Patchy Rash: This can look different from person to person, ranging from dandruff-like spots to significant eruptions over much of the body.
  • Dry, Cracked Skin: The affected skin may be dry, cracked, and sometimes it can bleed.
  • Itching, Burning, or Soreness: People with psoriasis often experience discomfort such as itching, burning, or soreness.
  • Cyclic Rashes: The rashes may come and go, flaring up for a few weeks or months and then subsiding.
  • Variety in Rash Color: The rash can have different colors depending on the skin tone. It might appear shades of purple with greyscale on brown or black skin and pink or red with silver scales on white skin.
  • Limited Joint Movements: Psoriasis can affect joints, leading to stiffness and limited movement.
  • Pain and Inflammation: The affected areas can be painful and inflamed.

Types of psoriasis:

Theory and Ayurvedic View on Psoriasis Treatment

In Ayurveda, all skin diseases are grouped into a category called “Kushta,” which is divided into two types: “Mahakushta” and “Kshudrakushta.” “Kitibha Kushta” falls under the category of Kshudrakushta, and its symptoms are similar to those of Plaque Psoriasis. Kitibha Kusta is characterized by discolouration (Shyava Varna), rough or scaly texture (Kinakhara Sparsha), hardness (Parushatva), and dryness (Ruksha).

According to Ayurveda, every Kusta condition occurs due to an imbalance of seven factors, namely Vata, Pitta, Kapha (three doshas), Twak (skin), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), and Lasika (lymphatic system). In simpler terms, Kitibha Kusta, like Psoriasis, is believed to result from disruptions in these elements, leading to specific skin symptoms.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Psoriasis

In Ayurvedic management of psoriasis, a combination of Samana (Pacifying treatment) and Shodhana (Purification treatment) is often employed.

Samana Karma (Pacifying Treatment):

  • This involves the use of internal medications to balance and pacify the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) that are believed to be imbalanced in psoriasis.
  • Internal medications may include herbal formulations, dietary recommendations, and lifestyle changes aimed at reducing symptoms and promoting overall health.

Shodhana Karma (Purification Treatment):

psoriasis is seen in Ayurveda as a condition where imbalanced doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) mix with the seven elements of the body (Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Lasika), leading to symptoms. To address this, purification therapy (shodhana) is considered crucial in treatment.

  • This approach involves Panchakarma therapies, which are a set of purification procedures designed to eliminate toxins from the body and restore balance.
  • Panchakarma procedures may include therapeutic vomiting (Vamana), purgation (Virechana), enemas (Basti) and nasal administration of medications (Nasya).
  • Also, include blood purification (Rakta Mokshana),

Cure Prospective of Psoriasis  Ayurvedic Treatment

According to Ayurveda, psoriasis is considered a chronic condition that is challenging to cure, and that’s why it is referred to as “Dushchikitsa” or difficult to treat. In Ayurvedic treatment addressing the root cause of a disease is essential for effective and long-lasting treatment.

Ayurveda recommends a therapeutic approach called “Shodhana,” which involves purification therapies. These therapies are designed to eliminate toxins from the body and balance the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). By purifying the body, Ayurveda aims to remove the underlying causes of psoriasis and prevent its recurrence.

Recommended Yoga Poses for Psoriasis

Psoriasis and stress have a tricky relationship. Stress can make the scaling and symptoms of psoriasis worse, and when symptoms worsen, it can cause more stress for the person. That’s why it’s really important for people with psoriasis to find ways to handle stress and keep their emotions in balance. Strong emotions like anger, anxiety, stress, or trauma can slow down the healing process, so it’s crucial to manage stress for better overall well-being.

Great ways to get rid of stress from both the body and mind are through practices like yoga and meditation
