Diabetes Ayurvedic Treatment in Kerala

Dr.Ajay B.A.M.S

Diabetes is a highly prevalent health condition in the modern world. It is an endocrine disorder characterized by inadequate regulation of blood glucose levels, leading to hyperglycemia. This occurs primarily due to insufficient insulin production in the body, with insulin being synthesized by the β-cells within the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. The main role of insulin is to respond to elevated blood glucose levels, even after a meal. When blood glucose levels rise, the pancreas is triggered to release the hormone insulin. This, in turn, signals liver, muscle, and fat cells to effectively reduce excess glucose in the bloodstream.

Diabetes generally manifests in two main forms:

  • Type 1 Diabetes (Insulin-dependent Diabetes Mellitus)
  • Type 2 Diabetes (Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus)

In addition to these, there are other categories of diabetes, such as:

  • Gestational Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes (Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus)

is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the body’s immune system mistakenly attacking the pancreas, resulting in the permanent destruction of more than 90% of its insulin-producing β-cells. This leads to a significant reduction or complete absence of insulin production. Type 1 diabetes is often referred to as “juvenile diabetes” because it is frequently diagnosed in children.

Type 1 diabetes is sudden onset

  • Increased urination (polyuria )
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased appetite
  • Skin infections like fungus etc.
  • Weight lose

Type 2 Diabetes (Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus)

Type 2 diabetes, often referred to as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, stands as the most prevalent form of diabetes, closely interconnected with one’s lifestyle choices. Typically observed in middle-aged individuals, this form of diabetes is more prevalent than type 1 diabetes, primarily attributed to sedentary lifestyles and insufficient physical activity, in the case of type 1 diabetes, where insulin production is impaired and in type 2 diabetes manifests when the body’s cells resist the normal effect of insulin so the response of insulin is diminished called insulin resistance.

Type 2 diabetes is sudden Gradual onset

  • Genital candidiasis
  • Lethargy
  • Increased urination
  • Weight loss
  • Dry mouth

Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a condition that manifests during pregnancy when the body’s insulin production becomes insufficient, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels that can impact both the pregnancy and delivery. Women who experience gestational diabetes, as well as their offspring, are at an elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.

Diabetes, also known as Prameha in Ayurveda, is a metabolic disorder. In addition to taking internal medications, maintaining a healthy diet is crucial. Simply relying on medication without a proper diet may not yield significant results. Effective management of diabetes involves a combination of appropriate medication and a well-balanced diet. Ayurveda offers remedies that focus on strengthening the pancreas, and addressing the root cause of the condition.
